The Joe Schembri Scholarship Fund - 20 years of Giving

For two decades, the Joe Schembri Scholarship Fund has been making a lasting impact in Mississauga by supporting young athletes in their pursuit of education. Established through an initial donation—matched by the Mississauga Terriers Hockey Club—the fund has grown steadily through careful investment. What’s compelling is that the Mississauga Terriers donated $40,000 to establish the fund, and to date, it has generated more than that amount in scholarships, distributing over $40,000

to support student-athletes. Today, the fund is worth over $60,000 and will continue to grant for generations to come. While the individual donor who helped establish this fund prefers to remain anonymous, their generosity—along with the Terriers’ commitment—has created a legacy of giving that continues to benefit local students. The Joe Schembri Scholarship Fund is a shining example of how philanthropy can make a long-term difference, supporting young people in both their academic and athletic journeys.

“The Mississauga Terriers Hockey Club has always been a community based organization with a philosophy of “Do it for the Kids” and a mission of “Molding our Future, One Player at a Time”. The establishment of The Joe Schembri Scholarship Fund created the opportunity for the club to invest in future generations by supporting student-athletes as they pursue their personal educational goals and at the same time honouring a legacy of dedication to youth hockey in our community. Contributing to the fund was an easy decision, as we saw this as another opportunity to acknowledge the passion and commitment both on and off the ice, as well as the Terrier good will and community service our players have been a part of. Seeing these young athletes get the support they deserve has created real, lasting impact in Mississauga as we’ve evidenced with former scholarship recipients continuing to pass it forward in their adult lives.”
