Celebrating Indigenous Voices through Jingtamok: An Indigenous Social

The $10,000 grant provided by the 2023 Hazel McCallion Fund for Arts, Culture and Heritage has made a significant impact on the Mississauga community through its allocation to the project titled "Jingtamok: An Indigenous Social" led by The Riverwood Conservancy in partnership with The Indigenous Network. The event aimed to amplify the Indigenous voice and promote reconciliation through cultural celebration and education.

The community of Mississauga has benefited immensely from Jingtamok, which provided a platform for Indigenous communities to access and celebrate their heritage. Beyond the 200+ participants physically present, the event fostered stronger relationships between Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples, raised awareness, and facilitated informed dialogue. Additionally, the grant leveraged support from volunteers, the City of Mississauga, and other stakeholders, further enhancing the impact of the initiative.

“I have always wanted to attend something like this to increase my knowledge, awareness and understanding of the history of Indigenous nations in Canada to strive to better my own reconciliation journey.”
