Music Education through Peel Music Teacher Workshops
The 2023 Hazel McCallion Grant for Arts, Culture & Heritage, awarded to the Mississauga Children's Choir, has had a significant impact on music education in the Peel Region. With a total grant of $8,700, the choir organized four workshops tailored specifically for Peel music educators.
These workshops provided invaluable opportunities for professional development, skill enhancement, and networking among music teachers. Through interactive sessions led by experienced clinicians and utilizing the choir's talented choristers as demonstrators, the workshops facilitated the acquisition of new teaching techniques and repertoire exploration. The grant funds were instrumental in covering the costs associated with venue arrangements, materials, and clinician fees, ensuring the success and accessibility of the workshops.
Music educators attending the workshops have expressed deep appreciation for the opportunity to engage with fellow professionals, share challenges, and learn innovative strategies from the choir's artistic staff and clinicians. The workshops have not only enhanced the skills and knowledge of participating music teachers but have also fostered a sense of camaraderie and collaboration within the local music education community. Furthermore, the workshops have served as a platform for the choir to showcase its talent and expertise, resulting in increased referrals of new choristers from participating music teachers. This symbiotic relationship between the choir and music educators has strengthened the musical ecosystem of Mississauga, contributing to the enrichment of both teaching practices and choral experiences for youth in the region.
“We had a big impact on music teachers who love our workshops, the opportunity to share challenges and learn new strategies from our artistic staff and clinicians. The workshops have benefitted everyone who attends. In return, the music teachers are referring us to new choristers.
We will definitely continue to host music teacher workshops, they are so beneficial to the teachers, to our staff, and to the growth of our community. There's nothing we would change! The choristers particularly love it when their own school music teachers show up for the workshops!”
